Charlotte, nota Charlie (Jennifer Lopez) ha trovato l'uomo giusto da sposare: Kevin, figlio di una famosa conduttrice TV: Viola Fields (Jane Fonda), che ha problemi di ansia e abusa di alcolici. Charlie, però, è una precaria, e in questo Viola, che in realtà ha paura di perdere Kevin, trova il pretesto per definirla "una persona senza passato". Perciò essa fa di tutto per fare impazzire Charlie e per boicottare il matrimonio. Ma la cosa sarà reciproca, poiché Charlie, aiutata dagli amici Remy e Morgan, riuscirà a tenere testa alla suocera.
