Trama:
1963, Signal, Wyoming. Sui pascoli di Brokeback Mountain, Ennis e Jack, due giovani mandriani, si conoscono, si studiano, diventano amici e infine si abbandonano a una passione senza scampo e senza futuro. Quando l'estate finisce i due lasciano i pascoli e si separano. Per entrambi, fidanzamento, matrimonio, figli. Brokeback Mountain sembra dimenticata. Un giorno, però, Jack decide di far visita a Ennis. Basta uno sguardo per capire che il tempo ha solo rafforzato il legame nato nella solitudine della montagna. Un legame che non conoscerà l'usura degli anni e li spingerà a sfidare clandestinità e menzogne, sensi di colpa e pregiudizi.
